Dissapointing Scene at the Consol Energy Center

The Penguins lost, 5-1 in Game 2 last night to the Tampa Bay Lightning, and it was, let's just say, disappointing all around. The guys gave it a good effort, but not a great one. Scoring chances fell flat, as did the morale of the team and the once enthusiastic crowd behind them.

That said, as I sat outside watching the game on the big screen in the Civic Arena parking lot, with a pretty chilly wind blowing I might add, I looked over and saw a brood of "fans" leaving the Consol Energy Center with about 15 minutes to go. They continued to poor out way before the third period was over.

It baffled me. These people who put down their money on hard to come by playoff tickets were just walking out and not looking back. It seems like a waste to spend the money on a ticket, parking, food and whatever else a person would buy and then simply walk out before the game is done. The game was certainly not going the way we'd all hoped it would and it was difficult to watch, but I don't think the answer is in leaving. It makes me wonder if, even in their disgruntled state, they can be called true fans of the team and the sport in general? When it's a great night and the team is knocking our socks off, sure, they are fans. But when it doesn't go their way, they leave.

Of course, I was frustrated about the way the game was playing out. Of course, I felt heartsick, but I also, despite the reality, hoped for the best. And even when I realized the best wasn't going to happen, I watched to support the players and the entire organization because I enjoy it either way.

I can't imagine it's a good feeling for the players when they look up into the stands and see people ascending the stairs leaving a generous portion of the seats empty while they're still playing their hearts out. It can't be encouraging for them when they already know the night's not going to end well. These guys need support from the fans in every game, but especially in the playoffs and especially during a rough game.

As someone who was not so fortunate to get a playoff ticket, I just don't understand that kind of mentality, playoffs or not. I love this team, win or lose. In my opinion, these fair weather fans don't deserve a ticket when there are so many who would love to be inside, seeing all the action live.

So please, if you are lucky enough to come by a seat for Game 5 next Saturday, whether it's looking good or not, just stay and enjoy where you are and, more importantly, support your Pittsburgh Penguins!
