Pittsburgh Steelers draft preview

With the Penguins in the middle of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and the Pirates already fourteen games in, it’s hard to believe that the NFL draft is just around the corner. With a few holes to fill, there are several players on the board who could potentially wear black and gold next season.

Because of the Steelers’ weaknesses in the defensive backfield, Brandon Harris and Jimmy Smith are both potential first round picks. Odds are, however, Smith will be long gone before the Steelers are on the board. Harris will probably be available due to a disappointing combine. He may very well be the best option at the thirty-one spot. Some experts think that Aaron Williams out of Texas will be available here as well.

The offensive line has been a struggling issue for the Steelers over the past few years. Danny Watkins, an offensive guard from Baylor would be an excellent fit. The only problem is that he’s already 26-years-old. Ben Ijalana out of Villanova may be a better fit. Also watch for Derek Sherrod out of Missouri.

While it’s likely the Steelers will look to upgrade there defensive backfield, or offensive line during the first round, it is possible that they will pick up a defensive end or nose tackle in the second and third rounds. Cameron Jordan out of California could possibly fall to the second, but it’s unlikely that we’ll see him in a Steelers uniform. Look for Allen Bailey out of Miami (FL), or even Jabaal Sheard from Pittsburgh.
