Mr. Irrelevant

All the hype seems to be on Cam Newton and the first pick of the NFL Draft.  Little is often said for the player whom is named “Mr. Irrelevant”.  The title Mr. Irrelevant is actually given to the last player selected in the NFL Draft each year.  Considered Mr. Irrelevant might be considered as a bad thing to most, except for the player that is chosen.  Let’s face it, if they weren’t selected at all that would be worse that being named Mr. Irrelevant.
The name Mr. Irrelevant actually came about in 1976 when former NFL receiver Paul Salata founded ‘Irrelevant Week’.  He announced the final pick of the NFL draft that year.  The first Mr. Irrelevant went to Kelvin Kirk who was drafted 487 of the 1976 draft.  It really is just a big joke to most people.  Instead of the Heisman Trophy, Mr. Irrelevant  gets the Lowsman Trophy, which shows a player fumbling the ball in disbelief.
With the 2011 Mr. Irrelevant last, 254th pick in the NFL Draft, The Houston Texans select homegrown defensive end Cheta Ozougwu of the Rice University Owls. Who??  Let’s meet 2011’s Mr. Irrelevant.
Cheta Ozougwu graduated from Alief Taylor High School, in the suburbs of Houston.  While at Alief Taylor, Ozougwu also played basketball, ran track, was a member of the FCA and the National Honor Society, and coached kids at the YMCA.  Somehow his big hands even managed to play the piano.  He is listed as 6’2. 255 pounds and is a 4 year letter winner at Rice University, which is a D4 school.  Even if his numbers are less than impressive, this young man’s post athletic career is almost certain to make everyone in H Town proud.
While at Rice University, Ozougwu managed to balance a full course load and keep decent grades to being respected on and off the field.  Of the field just some of the good that he has already done in his own community includes being a mentor and youth coach at the Good Hope Baptist Church, volunteering at the Houston Food Bank, volunteer mentored Krause Children’s Center, Secretary of the African Christian Fellowship, Made the commissioners Honor Roll, was a member of the Black Student Association Social Committee, a member of the fellowship of the Christian Athletes, volunteered as a basketball and football coach at Alief YMCA, volunteered as a Floor Hospitality host at Harris County Hospital, was member of the Rice African Student Association, and was involved in the Rice University Annual Fund.
Even if Mr. Irrelevant doesn’t have a great track record of success in the big leagues, the 2011 winner has a big heart and is a sure bet to do great things and be a great contributor of society.
