Pirates Weekly Preview 5/21/12
Current record: 19-22 (3.0 GB)
Upcoming Schedule
vs. Mets 5/21 to 5/23
vs. Cubs 5/25 to 5/27
A lack of offense still eats at the Pirates.
On Friday, Justin Verlander was 2 outs away from a no-hitter, as the Tigers defeated the Bucs 6-0. The following day, however, McCutchen belted 2 home runs in the 4-3 win. Of course, a 3-4 record last week after being two games away from .500 last Monday was disappointing. Thankfully the Cardinals have lost 4 straight, and 8 out of the last 10. So all in all, the week wasn't a total debacle. Not to mention the fact that every game was on the road. It feels great to be back home.
Tonight the Buccos will face two-time Cy Young winner, Johan Santana as they take on the Mets. Pitching for the Bucs, Erik Bedard, who despite making $4.5 million dollars this year has already lost 5 games. What a solid investment, Mr. Huntington. As usual, it would be awfully nice to reach .500 by the end of the week. If we can avoid getting slaughtered and swept by the Mets, I like our chances against the crappy 15-26 Cubs.
Players to watch (PS - I'm not even going to include Andrew McCutchen (#MVP) again because I feel it is quite evident that he deserves to be watched every week)
Neil Walker - The Pittsburgh kid has been in a bit of a slump lately, hitting just .184 through out the last 10 games. Though he did hit a solo shot in yesterday's 3-4 loss against the Tigers. I'm predicting Mr. Walker to have a big week, starting tonight against Santana.
Rod Barajas - What has gotten into this guy lately? Hitting .353, including 4 home runs in just the last 10 games. Talk about stud quality. Having that said, I doubt this streak will forego much longer.
Garrett Jones - Once again, Jones is on the players to watch list. Mainly because he has just 3 hits in his last 29 at bats. Maybe he's due for a few homers this week?
