The Pittsburgh Steelers OTAs begin this coming Tuesday and Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace will not be there. Mandatory minicamp is June 12-14, which Wallace is also likely to miss. The Steelers have a brand new offensive coordinator and all new terminology in their offense. So these events are kind of important, to say the least.
According to NFL league rules, if Wallace doesn't sign by June 15, the Steelers will be able to reduce the amount of the tender to 110 percent of his 2011 salary. Wallace would then see his salary reduced to $577,000 this upcoming season. Good, I hope that happens to him.
Wallace wants more money and a new contract. That's fair, he has certainly outperformed his rookie contract. He has put up some good numbers and made the Pro Bowl. Wallace is a really good player. He deserves more money and a long-term deal.
That being said he is fooling himself if he thinks he should and will get the same kind of deals that Larry Fitzgerald and Calvin Johnson got. Wallace is good, those two guys are great. Wallace should not even put himself in the same sentence as them. If a team wants to pay Wallace around $100 million by all means then Wallace should take the money and run you fast bastard. Then again if a NFL team pays Wallace anywhere near $100 million their GM should be fired and thieirfans should boycott.
Wallace is not a $100 million player. Not on any planet. The NFL has made it easier to pass the ball which makes most receivers a dime a dozen, with the exception of a few unreal talents(Calvin Johnson/Larry Fitzgerald), Wallace is not one of those guys.
Wallace is maybe the best deep-threat in the NFL. His speed is pretty much unmatched. However, his hands, jumping ability, and agility are average at best for his position. His route-running, awareness, and ability to make the big catch is below average.
Some expect the hard-working and much more humble Antonio Brown to develop into a much better complete receiver than Wallace. Wallace does not deserves the money he is asking for. Wallace should be looking for a 5-6 year deal worth $60 million. I am quite confident that the Steelers front-office would approve of that.
If Wallace thinks he is doing himself any favors with all of these demands he is smoking some good stuff. If Wallace does not sign his tender he will not play. Try and earn an extension or a big time deal with another team without playing in 2012.
The downside of Wallace holding out is it hurts his teammates. Wallace might not be an elite receiver but he is a good player, and without him on the field the offense will suffer. Antonio Brown will see more double teams and the Steelers will be without a true deep-threat. Wallace's selfishness represents everything that is wrong with pro sports.
Congratulations Mike, you're a true selfish prick.

ReplyDeleteIt's very easy for people to talk about running a sports site like this, without realizing the level of commitment it takes. Chad has done a great job here, and the site is a fun place to catch up on Pittsburgh sports. I am proud to be a part of the site.
