Rory McIlroy: The Beginning of a New Era
Congratulations to Rory McIlroy for his dominating US Open victory. Now,
golf has a future.
Over the last four days was there a record Rory McIlroy didn't break at
Congressional? He scored the lowest under par (-16) and had the lowest
score through 72 holes (268) to name a few. He leaped from eighth in the
world golf rankings to fourth. He also became a superstar overnight.
Rory is now golf's golden boy and a breath of fresh air. Golf will look to
Rory to help rebuild the sport after Tiger Woods's turbulent troubles and
destroyed knees have forced him from the spotlight for some time to come.
The stage is set for Rory McIlroy to be the man. To be Superman. The
crowds at Congressional cheered louder for him than the same Washington DC
fans watching John Cena later that night. You would have to hire the
Vancouver Riot Patrol to quell the horde of people jumping on his
bandwagon. The masses had no Tiger, and didn't care. They wanted and got
Rory McIlroy.
The last ten majors had ten different winners, but none have felt like
this. Guys like Kaymer, Schwartzel, and Oosthuizen winning seemed like
flukes, one-&-doners, and lucky. Some felt expected. Did anyone think
Tiger Woods would lose to Rocco Mediate in the 2008 US Open? Or Phil not
to wear the green jacket for a third time after that shot through the
trees on the 13th? This major feels different because new greatness was
potentially birthed here. In the eight rounds of major championship golf
played this year, McIlroy has lead seven. He is developing a killer sense for
majors. Those other guys are not.
The success McIlroy has now needs, must avoid being a flash in the pan. If he
is to be the man for the golf's new era, then he has to win more majors
and fast. Tiger didn't wait long to win his second major and Rory cannot
either. The fuse is set and match lighted. I think this could be a big
bang. I'd suggest wearing sunglasses.
