Doug Legursky's chance to shine in the Super Bowl

The Steelersare heading to the Super Bowl but something is missing.  The Steelers will make the trip to North Texas without the services of their Pro Bowl center.  Maurkice Pouncey is doubtful for the game due to a high ankle sprain suffered early in the AFC title game. Replacing the first round all everything rookie will be Doug Legursky.  Like the rest of Steelers Nation I am holding my breath.  So, who is this undrafted free agent and can he fill the shoes of the Steeler’s rookie of the year?

During Legurskys career at Marshall he was named to the all Conference USA team three times.  Despite his on field achievements Legursky was not drafted and signed a free agent contract with the Steelers in 2008.  After being cut twice, the Steelers signed him to the practice squad following a season ending injury to Kendall Simmons.  A year and a half on the practice squad prepared Legursky for his step up to the NFL.  Coming into the 2010 training camp there was open competition on the offensive line.  It soon became obvious that Pouncey would lead the way at center there was only one back up position left. Legursky beat out former starter Justin Hartwig for the last spot on the line. Tunch Ilkin even went as far as saying “If they didn’t draft Pouncey he would have been the starting center.”
There is no doubt that the deciding  factor in keeping Legursky was his versatility. This year he has played  all five positions on the line, fullback and tight end. Legursky has played in all eighteen games this season, including four starts (the Steelers went 3-1) at guard.   Two weeks of practice will help the chemistry between Legursky and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.  In previous weeks these two had almost no work together, and it showed with two fumbled snaps in the title game.
Have faith Steelers Nation, for two years Legursky has been going head to head with Casey Hampton in practice, not a bad way to prepare for B.J Raji. The Steelers have always been able to build from within and this will just be another example of the depth of the roster. Also let’s not forget, the last person the Steelers cut repeatedly became a legend, James Harrison.
