So I attended the Steeler's pep rally on Friday night at Heinz Field. It was a cold and bitter night in downtown Pittsburgh as a rumored 18,000 fans gathered to celeberate the Steelers going to the Super Bowl.
I went to the rally with my best friend and my girlfriend and saw a few other people that I know. The event was free so of course some people that can't afford tickets to a game were down there. Including the guy with the sweet beard below. I took a picture with him and my friend Dan. I had to get a picture with this guy. He looks like a cross between Mick Foley and Fozzy Bear. This guy was loaded to say the least. I talked to him for a few minutes and I still have no idea what he said.
He was probably the most popular fan there. A number of people were asking him to take pictures with them.
Besides the drunk guy with the beard, the pep rally was a letdown for the most part. "House of Soul" performed and sang a lot of old, but good funk songs. The music wasn't bad and they sang a lot of good songs from the 70's and 80's.
Of course there was no shortage of drunk yinzers down there.
Brett Keisel was the star of the show. He came out sporting the best beard in sports and got the fans amped up. Was it just me or did some of the players seem drunk? Then again I would have been drunk if I were them to.
The love affair this city has with Antwaan Randle-El still baffles me. This guy is not a very good player. He got one of the loudest ovations of the night. Why? His contribution to this team has nothing to do with them being in the Super Bowl. I get it, he threw a touchdown pass on a trick play in Super Bowl XL. Does that really warrant him getting treated as a lifetime hero in this town? Are Steelers' fans really that dumb?
I for one wish that he wasn't even on this team. Bill Hillgrove asked him about a number of plays in the game against the Jets. Well if anyone would know it would be Randle-El, after all he had the best seat in the house, On THE BENCH!
I'll give him this, he's really good at calling for a fair-catch.
I'm sure most of the fans had a good time down there but I thought the pep rally was a letdown for the most part.
Most of the team was there but there were a number of players missing. Hines Ward wasn't there. Of course no one in this city will say anything about him missing the event. What if Ben Roethlisberger skipped it? You would never hear the end of it. Some fans would say that Charlie Batch should start in the Super Bowl. Along with Ward, Heath Miller, Mike Wallace, Casey Hampton, and Troy Polamalu all did not attend the game. Again if Ben doesn't go you would never hear the end of it.
Lastly I have to question the number of fans there. Some are saying that there was 18,000 people there. NO WAY! I'm saying 8-10,000 at most.
