When it rains it pours. This weekend was a complete disaster for Pittsburgh sports fans. First, Malkin's out with a season ending knee injury, then the Super Bowl heartbreak (I'm not ready to talk about it yet), and now Ashton Gibbs has a knee injury that will keep him out at least 10-14 days.
His timing couldn't be worse...The current Big East leaders are going into the toughest stretch of their season. The Panthers will participate in the backyard brawl tonight at West Virginia. These games are always highly competitive and it's difficult to win at WVU Coliseum. Then, Pitt has to travel to Villanova on Saturday night. There are no easy games for Pitt in the next two weeks, and with Gibbs being out, our chances of staying 9-1 in the Big East is looking pretty bleak. Wannamaker and Brown need to step up their game, and Woodall will have to be consistent for us to walk away with road wins.
Gibbs has an MCL injury due to wear and tear. Luckily, Pitt spokesman Greg Hotchkiss says Gibbs won't require surgery. MCL injuries take a long time to heal even if they don't require surgery, so let's hope he's the exception and he really is 100% in two weeks.
This Pitt team is deep, so it could be worse. BUT it could be a lot better for Pitt fans and people in the city of Pittsburgh today.
Let's Go Pitt!
