This lockout needs to end. I think that the subject has been beaten to a bloody pulp by the media, owners, and players, but this lowly sports blog writer is offering a simple solution to make everyone happy; pay the damn players and let's start the season! I can understand why the owners are fighting, but from the perspective of the middle class, it's nickel and diming.
Look, the players make a hell of a lot more money than I could fathom, but the owners trump that, so let's not let greed get in the way. Players make millions, owners make billions, and the everyday fan gets to watch them squabble over it for months. Doesn't anybody just care about the game? If they did, there would be no lockout.
Let's break it down into business for all the rich people getting upset. Each team is its own business which operates in a bigger business, the NFL. This means each team has to maintain stadiums, staffs, rosters, advertising, prices, parking, and those are only off the top of my head. Well the players are each team's assets. You mean to tell me the Colts would sell jerseys without Peyton Manning?
Not only that, these guys have dedicated their lives to working out and training every day. Not to mention, they want to extend the season now. So if they extend the season and cut the players’ salaries, that money the players make will stretch out a whole lot less. Also think of the injuries that a starter accumulates over his career and lifetime. Many running backs are paralyzed or have brain damage just ten years after leaving the sport. How many owners worked their asses off to the point of crippling pain and being in a wheelchair? I'm offering a simple solution, take care of your assets, and their happiness and play will bring more butts to the seats, more hot dogs to the mouth, and more jerseys to the checkout line. Pretty mutually beneficial, eh? Let's start the season
