Michael Vick: Now Overrated and Overpaid

http://dc-cdn.virtacore.com

The Philadelphia Eagles shocked the football world yet again on Monday when the signed 31 year-old quarterback Michael Vick to a six-year deal, worth $100 million, with $40 million guaranteed.

Of course those who root for Vick have to be happy for him. Two years ago he was in federal prison, now he’s a starting quarterback and making a $100 million. From what we know Vick has turned his life around.
In 2010, Vick was 8-3 as a starter in the regular season and had the best year of his career. Vick put on a show for the football world against the Washington Redskins, scoring six touchdowns, throwing and running the ball.

That being Vick seemed to regress the last seven games of the season and threw a costly fourth quarter interception against the Green Bay Packers that clinched a loss for the Eagles.

Vick is a good player but because of his highlight type style and media love affair, Vick tends to get overrated. I agree he can be fun to watch but he’s not the great player a lot of people tend to think he is.
Vick plays quarterback. Today’s quarterbacks are asked to be accurate, make good decisions with the ball, and win games.

When it comes to the elite quarterbacks, Vick just doesn’t compare. For their careers, Vick came in last in all of the top quarterback statistics compared to Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, and Philip Rivers.

Vick has tremendous athletic ability. He’s a fast runner and can throw the ball farther than almost every single qb in the league. But where has that gotten him and his team? Vick is 2-3 in his career in the playoffs.
Vick for his career is only 10 games over .500 as a starter, while Ben Roethlisberger and Tom Brady are well over 30 games over .500. Vick has completed just 55.3 % of his career passers, while the six quarterbacks I have mentioned all complete over 60% of theirs.

While some are impressed by Vick’s running ability, I am not. Running quarterbacks just do not win Super Bowls. Steve Young was a bit of a runner but he’s one of the most prolific passers of all-time, Vick is below average in that department.

Does Vick deserve to be paid more than a Peyton Manning or a Ben Roethlisberger? Of course not, both of those guys have put up good stats consistently and have a Super Bowl, two in Roethlisberger’s case.
I have no problem with Vick getting the money other than the fact that as a football contract, I think it sucks.
I would never want my team to give a 31 year-old quarterback a six year deal, especially one with the injury history and problems that Vick has.

I also wouldn’t want to give a quarterback $100 million over six years, when he has never been consistent and has never won anything.

Personally I can care less that Vick got this contract. He did horrible things in the past but he did his time. I don’t think he’s a very good guy and as a player I definitely think this contract makes him overpaid and overrated.

More importantly has anyone gotten a bigger second chance than Vick? He’s the first athlete I’ve ever seen with two different $100 million in one career. What will the excuses be if he screws this up? What will be the excuse when Vick doesn’t live up to these lofty expectations as a player?

I hear Vick being called elite and some people even going as far as to say he’s the best football player in the league. Based on what? The numbers don’t lie. Vick finally looked like a real quarterback last year, for the first time in his career. Big props to Andy Reid and his coaching staff. Vick is now surrounded by a Super Bowl caliber team and tons of skilled weapons, and he plays in a qb friendly offense.

No longer are there any more excuses and a lot more pressure. That’s what Vick is now facing.
