Peyton Manning is a future first ballot Hall of Famer and has accomplished a lot in the NFL....but he's not worth all of this hype at this point in his career. The former qb of the Indianapolis Colts was cut by his former team after he missed the entire 2011 NFL season due to multiple neck-injuries and surgeries.
Not only the injuries but consider the fact that Manning is on the downside of his career and I just don't get why teams would throw young talented qbs away to take such a gamble on him. It's not like Peyton Manning guarantees you a Super Bowl victory.
Manning is 9-10 in the playoffs for his career and only has one ring. That's terrible for a guy who was on a team that concomitantly won 12 or more games every season he was there. Yes the Colts were bad before Peyton got there but he had some damn good players and teams around him.
Peyton was a great qb but he had a lot of help. Let's take a look:
1. Manning was surrounded by talent: Edjerrian James who led the league in rushing two straight years, Marshall Faulk before that. Manning got to throw the ball to Reggie Wayne, Marvin Harrison, and Dallas Clark all in their primes. The Colts have also had multiple Pro-Bowl lineman blocking for Manning including Jeff Saturday.
2. Manning has never had a good defense. I hear this one all of the time but it's wrong. The Colts had the number one scoring defense in the NFL in 2007 and the number two scoring defense in 2005. Both years the Colts failed to win a playoff game. Any more excuses?
3. How about the fact that people actually try to call Peyton clutch...That one is a laugher...Manning is 9-10 in the playoffs. The only Super Bowl he won in his career was won by his team in-spite of him. Manning had three td passes and seven interceptions in those four playoff games and somehow was named Super Bowl MVP, thanks NFL.
4. Manning isn't good outside...so signing in Denver makes perfect sense right? Manning has never been on the same level outdoors as he has been in that climate controlled dome. In Denver he'll have to play in the rain, in snow, and in high winds. Good luck.
If I seem like a Peyton Manning hater I'm not. Manning is a top 10-15 qb all-time. But he's not the best ever and not even close. Joe Montana, John Elway, Steve Young, Johnny Unitas, Brett Favre were all better qbs than Manning and Eli, Aaaron Rodgers, and Ben Roethlisberger are all on their way to having better careers .
The Broncos had Tim Tebow who took them from contending from the first pick to beating the Steelers in the first round of the playoffs....Manning has 0 playoff wins in the last two years. Tebow is young, talented, and healthy.....Again doesn't make sense.
Good luck Denver.
