Pens 5 Red Wings 1 in opening night of the Consol Enegy Center

The Consol Energy Center is gorgeous, we know this. However, speaking for most of Pens fans, I was just glad that there was going to be a hockey game played in it. Last night the Pens took on the Detroit Red Wings. Even though it's just preseason, I felt that I would break the game down for yinz.

82 seconds into the game, newly acquired forward Mike Comrie beat Detroit's Chris Osgood to give the Pens a 1-0 lead. The Pens went on to beat the Red wings 5-1.  Defenseman Ruslan Salei scored the only Detroit goal on the night, beating Marc-Andre Fleury in the second period.

Other goal scorers included Sidney Crosby, Ryan Craig(2), and Brett Sterling, who played on the same line as Crosby.
Crosby had a goal, an assist, and six shots on goal before sitting out the third period with a sore hip flexor. Thankfully, the injury is not believed to be serious.

Brooks Orpik had a busy night knocking Johan Franzen out of the game with 1:43 left in the first period with an injury described as a charley horse. Orpik also got into a fight with Todd Bertuzzi.

Fleury played the first two periods for the Pens, stopping 20 of 21 shots he faced. Brad Theissen stepped in as the closer, stopping all five shots the Red Wings mustered in the third period.

Jess Boulerice got to make history by being involved with the first ever fight in the new arena by beating down Aaron Downey.

The Penguins outshot the Red Wings 37-26 in the game.

The preseason picks up again on Friday night at Columbus, followed by home game #2 on Saturday night against the very same Blue Jackets.
