On a chilly night at PNC Park, the Pirates felt the heat from a Brewer team led by pitcher, Shaun Marcum. The right-hander easily handled the hapless Bucs on 4 singles over 7 innings. Three Brewer relievers closed the deal.
For awhile, the 4,000 vigilant fans had glimmers of history being made as neither team had a hit through half of the game. That ended when Pirate starter, Correia gave up a lead-off double to Jonathan Lucroy, followed by a bunt single by mound opponent Marcum. With runners at the corners with one out, Carlos Gomez hit a high fly ball down the right field line that was deep enough to score Lucroy, who played his first game after being sent to the minors with a broken finger.
Ryan Braun then singled, and Prince Fielder continued his hot streak by reaching the bull pen in left center for his 3rd homer of the season. Fielder has been ripping it, after winning the NL player of the week; he has kept the tempo up hitting his 3rd homer in 4 games. And he continues to be a leader, with a heavy bat, and his attitude. “We’re winning now, so I’m happier all the way around. I’m happier with our overall team than I am about the award.” Fielder was quoted as saying.
The Brewers have bounced back nicely after a 0-4 start. They are led by the hitting of Fielder and Braun, and a pitching staff that is stable.
The Pirates are showing the inverse of the Brewers. After a respectable start, the Bucs have dropped 4 out of 5 at home, and slid under .500 for the first time in 2011.
