Wow! Holy cow where are the old Pirates? They are five-hundred on June 22nd after coming back today against Baltimore. They are 37 -37. Who in the world would have predicted this for this team? Certainly not I and I don’t think any of you!
It’s not to say this team isn’t without flaws. They have their fair share.
First can this starting rotation seriously keep up this unbelievable run? I mean come on they are vastly over performing their talent level. None of them are top of the rotation starters but they are acting and playing the role quite well. Who would of thought?

Second will the hitting ever come around even to mediocrity? The hittin is dead last in the majors. They are really not taking advantage of the great pitching while they have it. If the team can keep up the run around five-hundred Neil Huntington and company are going to try and get a bat. Clint has even said they are looking but they are really expensive right now. It’s like the price tag has inflated. But we will see. They don’t absolutely have to trade for one; they can always bring up someone from the minors. It is slim pickings down there though.
I believe as we continue to roll through the all star break and the scorching heat of the summer the hitting will start to get better and the pitching will regress some but they will balance each other out and we will surprisingly have a team that will compete and have a shot to win day in and day out.
It is really exciting!
As this young team continues to scratch and fight for wins will they have a shot at the wild card and their first playoff berth in eighteen long, treacherous, unbearable years?
They are in contention. They are 3 games out of first place in the division. With Albert Pujols out for a month and a half, and Milwaukee not pulling away from anyone. Also the Reds are struggling a lot with their pitching, this is possible. Let’s go over this again.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are 3 games out of 1st place in the division on June 22nd! Someone please pinch me, or slap me or something. This is unreal.
The long time laughing stock of the league is in contention. The team that has had jokes thrown at them like “Pittsburgh rookie Andrew McCutchen hit three homeruns in a recent game. If the Pirates knew how good he really was, they'd have already traded him.” Or “A fan was hit in the head by a broken bat during a matchup between the Pirates and the Brewers. He suffered far less trauma than those who actually had to watch the entire game.” Now those are older jokes but the point is all Pirate fans have been ridiculed for so long. Now finally we have a team that has glimpses of hope. They have a bright future!
The playoffs may be another year off. We can still enjoy this team playing having a chance to win every game they play. Enjoy every minute of it folks, and who knows the playoffs may come sooner than we think!

I just heard someone say we can't trade Maholm this year b/c we need him for the playoff run. This team is exciting, but there isn't going to be a p[layoff run. Not even close. We are talking about a beyond-historic turnaround if that were to happen, which it won't. Never stop building! We are close, but not there yet. It's sad b/c people are going to chastise Huntington for making trades for the future and not for this year come the deadline, but it is the absolute correct thing to do. Please don't mortgage the future because of shortsightedness.
