Not Re-Signing Rob Scuderi Will Haunt the Pittsburgh Penguins

As the band Cinderella once sang "You don't know what you got til it's gone". So damn true.In life you truly do not know what you got until it's gone. I know personally, I have regretted multiple decisions of letting people go out of my life for one reason or another.Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Ray Shero should feel this way about failing to re-sign defenseman Rob Scuderi after the 2008-2009 season.

Scuderi was a huge part in the Pens' Stanley Cup championship. Scuderi was teamed with Hal Gill on the Pens blueline and they shut people the F down! Scuderi had one the best defensive plays in Pens' history in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Detroit Red Wings.

In that offseason Scuderi was a UFA and signed with the Los Angeles Kings. The deal was for four-years $13 million. What a steal for the Kings! Scuderi is one of the best defensive defenseman in the NHL and plays on the Kings top defensive pair along with Drew Doughty.

Scuderi has been nothing but really really good this postseason, averaging around 21 minutes of ice time with a +1.

Also, if you've been watching these NHL playoffs you've seen that defense wins championships. The four teams left are all arguably the best defensive teams in the league. Blocking shots and playing defensively responsible hockey has been the name of the game. The Pens tried the complete opposite.

When you look at what the Kings got Scuderi for and compare it to the contract that the Pens gave Paul Martin, you're stomach might start to hurt. I'm not saying that the Pens would have won the cup this year had they re-signed Scuderi, but I will say that they would have been a better team with him.
