It is not a secret anymore that the Pirates All Star closer Joel Hanrahan may be on the trading block. With a rash of injuries and poor performances from closers throughout the league, a dependable ninth inning workhouse is what every winning team must have. With that said, are the Pirates willing to deal their franchise closer? The answer may not be what you want to hear.
From Nate McClouth to Freddy Sanchez, the Pirates have found a way to upset their fans and trade away key players chosen to resurrect the organization. With the Hammer it gets a little tricky. On the surface, trading Hanrahan seems like a terrible idea. But the Pirates must listen to whatever offers come their way. Let's face it, this team is on the brink of becoming a playoff team, but we still lack a few big bats to drive in runs in key situations.

Last season the starting pitching was lights out for the first 90 games, but when they started to unravel the run support just wasn't there. If they are able to trade Hanrahan for a major league ready power bat then i say pull the trigger.
With that said, there may only be a few teams willing to part ways with such a hitter that the likely destination for Hanrahan would be somewhere between the Yankees and the Rangers. Other rumors include the Nationals and the Red Sox, but with Rivera likely lost for the season and maybe his career, the Yankees will have more reason to part with a solid hitter than most teams. But this is all speculation and Hanrahan has been quoted saying he would love to remain in the Burgh. I personally love the Hammer and would be heartbroken to see him go, but if a deal can improve the organization than I will be willing to let go.
