I really don't care because it's not a very original idea nor is it relevant. Sure it would be fun for Pittsburgh to host the Super Bowl and I hope it happens, but forgive me if I'm more concerned about the actual football team in which the stadium is used for most, the Steelers.
The Steelers just had an abysmal 8-8 record. They turned the ball over constantly, they couldn't get to the opposing teams's quarterback, couldn't make any big plays on defense, their $100 million qb got hurt again and failed to be any kind of hero down the stretch, and they couldn't run the ball to save their lives.
Now they are $14.2 million over the cap heading into March, again. They have a lot of players who simply make too much.
Troy Polamalu, who can't stay healthy to save his life, is due $7.5 million next year and is set to be a free-agent after the 2014 season. Polamalu is a border-line Hall of Famer and has been a great man and player for this franchise, but he's going to be 32 and missed at least nine games for the second time in four seasons last year. Not only that but even when he's been on the field, he hasn't done too much for the team, having just THREE interceptions in the last 23 games. On top of all of that, Polamalu and the media talk about retirement every single offseason. This is definitely their toughest decision. What to do with Polamalu?
James Harrison, will be 35 years old by the start of the 2013 season. He's missed EIGHT games in the last two seasons, and has not had double-digit sacks since the 2010 season. Last year he didn't even reach 50 total tackles for the first time since becoming a starter. He's injury prone, he's 35, and he's due $6.57 million this season and $7.57 million in 2014, also his last year of his contract. Harrison has been a headache off the field and I for one think the Steelers should save themselves $6.57 million by releasing Harrison in march. Bye.
Willie Colon, the Steeler's single handily worst signing in the last four years needs to go. He can't stay healthy and he's not an elite player that's worth the trouble. He's missed a total of 35 out of the last 48 games. Colon is due a whopping $5.5 million next year, unreal. Unless he takes a big pay cut, and do not count on that, Colon should and hopefully will be gone. See ya stinky.
Rashard Mendenhall and Mike Wallace will want way too much to return. Both of them are headaches and both of them are highly overrated. I expect both of them to sign with other teams who will overpay them drastically. Enjoy the dropped passes and half-assed effort from Wallace, and the conversational skills of Mendenhall. See ya.
Keenan Lewis needs to come back. The cornerback position actually performed well at times and I think Lewis and Cortez Allen are decent players. If Lewis doesn't come back the Steelers will once again become very weak at that position and will be forced to draft a CB in the 1st two rounds. Lewis might be pricey but as long as it's not anywhere near what Ike Taylor got they should pull the trigger.
Bring Plaxico Burress back. He's a playmaker and Ben loves having him. All of the other receivers are midgets and Burress did nothing but make plays for the team when he got a chance. He'll be cheap and Wallace will be gone. Only makes sense.
Bring restricted free-agent Jonathan Dwyer back and let Isaac Redman go. Although Redman's average per carry isn't that bad (4.2) he's had 7 fumbles in the last 3 seasons and doesn't provide the Steelers with many big plays. Dwyer fits the offense a little better and has more big-play potential. I am still an advocate of drafting a running back in the 1st two rounds of the draft this year and maybe bringing in someone like Chris Ivory from the Saints.
I would bring Larry Foote back as long as he'll play for around $1 million. He can still get the job done and I'm not sure if Sean Spence will A.) be healthy B.) be good enough. Foote is a good locker room guy and as long as he's cheap I would bring him back.
LaMarr Woodley, Lawrence Timmons, and Ben Roethlisberger all will need to have their contracts restructured again. I'm sure Omar Kahn will work some magic, move some money around, and we'll see almost $10 million off the cap just from that. The Steelers need to extend Roethlisberger's contract for a few more years, his contract is up after 2015. Woodley needs to lose some damn weight and actually give a damn. He's the second highest paid player on the team, making a whopping $13.5 million next year. That's a lot of snacks.
Speaking of snacks, Casey Hampton should not be re-signed. Sorry snacks. Maybe the Steelers can give him some bullshit radio show, and a lifetime supply of Heinz ketchup.
I see Brett Keisel shave his beard off. Awesome, now he's just another white/mediocre defensive lineman. Should have kept the gimmick. Keisel is due to make $4.5 million next season. Something has to be done about that. He's just not worth that much.
Well that's all I got for now. Let me know what yinz think.
