Are the Pittsburgh Steelers Just Going to Give Up on Jason Worilds?

The Pittsburgh Steelers haven't had much success in the second round of the draft in recent history. Sure there are some exceptions, but for the most part it's been a huge hit or miss round. Personally, think second round picks are too valuable to waiver and I would like to assume that a second round pick would eventually turn into an impact player on the team.

In the 2010 NFL draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers selected Jason Worilds in the second round out of Virginia Tech. I disagreed with the pick at the time, mostly because I thought that it was too early to draft Worilds, and because I thought the Steelers had more important needs.

However, with the release of old man James Harrison, Worilds now has value. He's been very good as backup with 10 sacks in the last three seasons. Those are impressive numbers for a guy that has played and started sparingly.

In 2011, Worilds' second year in the league, he started seven games and did well. He had 25 tackles and three sacks, which isn't terrible. Last year, Worilds only started three games but finished with five sacks.  Worilds' five sacks were more than what LaMarr Woodley had with probably five times less playing time. Yikes.

But now it appears that the Steelers are going to take outside linebacker Jarvis Jones in the first round of the 2013 NFL draft. Assuming that Jones makes it to the 17th pick. Jones is a great talent but he also comes with a big risk. Jones suffers from spinal-stenosis, which could end his football days very easily at any time.

If the Steelers draft Jones, or any pass-rusher in the first or second round this year, that will most likely be the end for Worilds. Considering that the Steelers have not one player left from their 2008 draft class, and they literally had zero impact from any rookies this past season.

The Steelers have a cornucopia of needs and taking an outside linebacker, when you already have a guy that was a second round pick, and that's done well when he's been giving a chance, would be disastrous for the Steelers.

If the Steelers draft Jones in this year you might as well refer to Worilds as Alonzo Jackson. At the same time you might as well have taken that second round pick in 2010 and flushed it down the shitter.

My advice, look for a safety in the first round or try and trade out of the 17th pick. The Steelers have so many needs and despite what Kevin Colbert says, they need rookies to make an impact this year.
