Injuries mount for Penguins & Call-ups

When the Pittsburgh Penguins take on the LA Kings tonight, it will almost be the WB/S Penguins vs the Kings. That is because they have a total of 6 of 12 forwards on their roster tonight that started the year in WB/S. At the Pens practice today the lines were as follows from the Pens report:

Dupuis-Staal-Kennedy

Rupp-Talbot-Conner

Craig-Vitale-Adams

Sterling-Jeffrey-N.Johnson/Godard

The first line consists of the usual third line. Granted it is the best third line in hockey, but it is not a first line in the NHL. If things keep going this way, and they roll with this lineup for awhile the Pens could see their playoff chances slip.

The team has been decimated with injuries, and just a string of bad luck. There is a hope that the pens will have Sidney Crosby (concussion) and Mark Letestu (knee) back by sometime in March. In the meantime we are anxiously awaiting the return of Aaron Asham (upper body), Chris Kunitz (lower body), and Matt Cooke (suspension). We know that Matt Cooke will be back in 4 games, but little is known about Asham and Kunitz. There are a few reports that say Kunitz will miss at least 3 more games. As we all know Malkin will have surgery today, and will be back for training camp next year.

Ray Shero has hinted that all these injuries has changed his game plan, and will be more active at the deadline than initially though. Below is a link to an article by Andrew Callender on what the Pens could possibly do at the deadline.
