Pens trade for Kovalev

It was announced today that the Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired forward Alexi Kovalev for a conditional 7th round draft pick. That pick becomes a 6th rounder if the Pens wins a 1st round playoff series, and Kovalev plays half the games. This is a great move by Ray Shero because it is low risk and high reward acquisition. It will be the first time Kovalev put a Penguins sweater on since the 2003 season. Kovalev will defiantly be great addition to the forward group. I don’t see Kovalev producing anywhere near what he used to, but hopefully a change of scenery will do him well.

Shero is also looking for another defenseman as the deadline approaches. In an interview today he was asked if he had cap space and is actively looking for an addition, he replied yes and yes.

Lost in all the fray of the Kovalev deal is that defenseman Brooks Orpik is out 4-6 weeks with a broken finger. It is not known right now if he will need surgery on his finger, but this is a HUGE loss for the Pens. Brooks was the rock of the Pens defense. A once deep and physical defense core just became a lot easier to play against.

In some other good news Letestu, Jeffrey, and Martin all practiced with the team today. Martin is hopeful for a return to the lineup as early as Saturday, but Wednesday at the latest. Letestu on the other hand is looking for a weekend return.
