Adding some iron to the Steel City only makes it stronger! Cam Heyward is the son of the late Craig “IronHead” Heyward. Ironhead had a career spanning 12 years and got his nickname because of the way he would put his head down and flat out level whoever was in front of him. Unfortunately he died at the age of 39 from a brain tumor, but nobody will forget his toughness. Lucky for us, his son has the same football mentality his old man did.
An outstanding, versatile Defensive End from Ohio State, Cam will be a great fit for us. Best known for Cam started out at Peachtree Ridge High School in Suwanee, Georgia where he was the 2006 Georgia Class 5A Defensive Player of the Year and led the Lions to the state championship. His senior year as a Lion he grabbed up over 100 tackles and 17 sacks and was considered the 7th best player in the GA and the 13th best defensive tackle in the nation. After his high school career, he was offered a scholarship from Jim Tressel and The Ohio State Buckeyes. His game would only improve from there.
He started as a true freshman in 2007 and was listed as an All-American after he dropped 30 tackles, 9 of them for a loss, 3 sacks, and two deflected passes. The next year he had 36 solo tackles and three sacks. His junior year he grabbed 10 tackles for a loss and 7 sacks and won and the Buckeyes won the Rose Bowl. He decided to stick around for another year with the Buckeyes and finish his degree. His senior year he went Beast Mode! Cam had over 150 tackles and 14 sacks his senior season. One of his most notable plays was when Ohio State played the over-hyped Miami Hurricanes. With the infamous DE drop/quarterback scan defense, Cam did a 4 step drop and picked off a pass close to the goal line and returned it 80 yards to lead the Buckeyes past the Hurricanes. Here’s proof period:
He has great wheels for a big man and will be a nice addition to our hard hitting, quick picking D. One thing is for certain, it’s going to be great to watch Cam help himself to a big bowl of Joe Flacco when we tear apart the Ravens this year.
