I know I didn’t expect Ward to dance away with the trophy back on March 21st when the 12th season got under way. As a Dancing with the Stars fan, over the years, the shows celebrities’ credibility seemed to go downhill with participants like Bristol Palin. So it made me wonder why on earth Hines would want to be on the show.
Right off the bat, Hines showed he had skills on the dance floor. He and partner Kym Johnson quickly found their way to the top where they remained for most of the competition with dances such as the Cha Cha, the Viennese Waltz and the Foxtrot with sharp technical movement and an equally matched chemistry. Not to mention Ward’s constant, mega-watt smile! The pair was never in the bottom two.
Mr. MVP himself went on to beat out another fan favorite, Kirstie Alley and technical (Disney) princess, Chelsea Kane.
His journey to the top wasn’t without a few mishaps along the way…
Ward was mistakenly arrested late at night in Los Angeles just a few weeks ago when the car he was driving (which belonged to the woman he was with) was reported stolen earlier in the day. Who doesn’t relay that message? Or why didn’t she simply call the cops again and tell them she found it? Weird.
And then there was Kym’s neck injury during rehearsals the week before finals when she didn’t flip underneath Hines the whole way. It looked very bad and could have been a terrible tragedy. Luckily, she was fine and they went on to dance a very emotional Argentine Tango that left Hines in tears.
Ward not only won over the judges but the audience as well. The support from Steeler Nation and all of Pittsburgh was an incredibly huge part of pushing Hines and Kym to victory every week. Pittsburgh sports fans aren't to be underestimated. They(we) sent Kris Letang, as a write in, to the NHL All-Star game back in Febuary and made sure to show the same kind of support to Hines. He was adamant about the Mirror Ball representing the city and all of it's people, especially in the absence of the Lombari trophy.
