Jaromir Jagr to return to the NHL would be big news, but if Jagr signs with the Detroit Red Wings, good God! The former Penguins star is considering a return to the NHL, perhaps with theRed Wings, MLive.com reports.
The Red Wings are exploring the possibility of signing the 39-year-old forward who has spent the past three seasons playing in Russia, Booth Newspapers has learned.
The Red Wings didn’t call Jagr. His agent, Petr Svoboda, called them. But Red Wings general manager Ken Holland has had several conversations with Svoboda, and coach Mike Babcock has spoken to Jagr.
Svoboda reportedly contacted Pittsburgh and the New York Rangers, two of Jagr’s former teams, as well as Montreal.
This would not go well with most Pens' fans. See Marian Hossa. The difference between Hossa and Jagr is that Pens' fans have a lot more emotion invested in Jagr. Jagr is still the second best player in Pens' franchise history.
Jagr helped the Pens win two Stanley Cups in 91 and 92. He also won multiple scoring titles and MVP's while playing in Pittsburgh.
However, Jagr demanded a trade after the 01 season, and was traded to the Washington Captials. Since then he's been treated as a villain. If Jagr does indeed sign with the Red Wings then it won't really make things any easier on his relationship with Pens' fans.
Of course I won't be mad at Jagr. He would be a great fit for the Red Wings. They have a lot of European players on their team and play in a system that is very suitable for Jagr's skillset. If Nicklas Lidstrom comes back the Red Wings will be a force. Could you imagine a Penguins-Red Wings Stanley Cup Finals with Jagr playing for the Wings?! World War 3.
The Detroit Free Press confirms that Jagr has interest in playing for the Red Wings, while Jagr's agent tells the Detroit News that the Red Wings would be "a great fit" for his client.
