It was considered one of the worst concussions of all-time! Ok maybe I'm exaggerating a little bit but Crosby's concussion was pretty bad. The last game that the Pittsburgh Penguins captain played in was on January 5th, and he just got cleared for his summer workouts.
Crosby has gotten the OK to resume workouts just shy of six months after his final game of the 2010-11 NHL season. Crosby met with specialist Dr. Michael Collins on Tuesday, was cleared and went to Canada on Wednesday, the Post-Gazette reported. He is expected to begin his rigorous summer training program at home in Cole Harbor, Nova Scotia, in late July.
Crosby, 23, appeared in just 41 games, and did not appear in the playoffs. Before his injuries, Crosby was among the league leaders in both points and goals and he finished with team leading totals of 32 goals and 66 points. Crosby also scored in 25 straight games at one point and was on pace for his best season statiscally of his career before the injureies.
Despite the good news, Penguins GM Ray Shero doesn't want to seem overly optimistic about the news.
"I don't want to look too far ahead, or whatever," Shero told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Thursday. "But there's no reason for me to expect him not to be (ready for camp), put it that way." "I don't know what his exact routine is going to be," Shero said. "A managed progression, probably."
"Everything will be closely managed by Dr. Collins," Shero said, "in terms of his progression leading up to him getting on the ice later in the summer per his usual routine."
Crosby did some light skating and light non-contact work during the playoffs and there was a real possibility of him coming back, but it never came to be.
The only question now is how is everyone going to react when Crosby takes his first hit? How is the NHL going to react? How are the fans going to react? How are the Penguins going to react? Most importantly, how is Crosby going to react?
