Steelers barely defeat the Jaguars: Offensive breakdown

The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 17-13 to improve to 4-2. A win is a win right? Not exactly. After blowing out a 3-1 Tennessee Titans team last week the Steelers failed to put away one of the worst teams in the league in week six.

Early in the game it looked like it was going to be a blowout and it should have been. The Steelers were up 17-3 and moving the ball at will on the Jaguars. Then all hell broke loss. Ben Roethlisberger was playing great but turned into Sh*t in the 2nd half. The Steelers started getting penalized for everything, couldn't block or tackle and let the Jaguars team hang in a game they clearly shouldn't have been in.

Here's a quick review of how everyone played on offense:

Ben Roethlisberger started the game off extremely well, going 11-15 in the first half for 180 yards and a touchdown. Roethlisberger was just 1-8 in the 2nd half for 20 yards and was sacked 3 times. Big Ben missed at least 3 throws that should/could have been touchdowns.

Early in the game Roethlisberger looked like he was set to have a big day, but quickly had a bad game for his standards. Roethlisberger was extremely accurate in the first half and had a ton of zip on the ball. The touchdown pass to Mike Wallace was money.

However, Roethlisberger missed a lot of potential touchdown passes to Antonio Brown, Wallace, and Emmanuel Sanders. In the 2nd half, Roethlisberger was extremely inaccurate and only completed one damn pass.

Roethlisberger did run for a big first down and did a good job of not throwing an incomplete pass late in the game which allowed the clock to keep running.

Roethlisberger still finished with a qb rating of 96.3 and did not turn the ball over. Not a great game by Ben but going forward he's on pace for over 4,000 yards and 24+ td passes, which is really good considering Joe Starkey thinks he's having a horrible season.

Rashard Mendenhall has been a hot topic in Pittsburgh lately. He missed last weeks game and a lot of people have been saying that his job should be up for grabs. Mendenhall responded with a 23 carry-123 yard performance, which included a career-high 68-yard run and a touchdown. Mendenhall looked extra motivated and actually hit the holes hard, running north-south instead of trying to tip-toe his way around defenders.

Even though I am not a Mendenhall fan per-say, especially with his views off the field, he is clearly the best back on the team in terms of talent, although I think Isaac Redman and Mewelde Moore are really good backups who deserve their fair share of playing time.

For Mendenhall I want to see more of this from a week to week basis from Mendenhall. If he needs to her the critics talk for motivation so be it, feel free to read my tweets Rashard.

The receiving core had a mixed day. Mike Wallace was targeted six times but only caught two passes for 76 yards and a touchdown. Roethlisberger under-threw Wallace on a deep ball in the first half that could have been a touchdown. Wallace is a beast and you can't teach speed, however, Arians and Ben need to mix things up a bit with Wallace. Run some slants and some cross routes with him. Find an easier way to get him the ball.

Hines Ward caught three passes for 47 yards and passed Michael Irvin on the list for all-time receiving yards. A great accomplishment for Ward no doubt. Ward did have a drop in the endzone that could have been a touchdown in the first half.

Heath Miller had a really good game both blocking and receiving. Miller caught 4 passes for 27 yards and should have had six catches but Roethlisberger failed to throw a catch able pass on two occasions.

The Steelers offensive line played a great game in the beginning. The first drive of the game was a well-oiled machine and the offensive line looked great. In the 2nd half not so much. Key holding calls, poor pass protection, and fatigue were all big reasons why the Steelers' offense failed to do anything in the 2nd half.

Going forward the Steelers' offense should be fine. I would just like to see less predictability. More play-action, more diverse routes for the recievers, and I know Roethlisberger won't be inaccurate like that on a weekly basis. The game-plan by Arians was very yinzer friendly concentrating on the run over the pass.
