I do
not believe that Tomas Vokoun is going to come into CONSOL and suddenly be a
game changer for the Pens. I think he will add a fresh pair of legs and he will
rest an unconfident goaltender in Fleury but , I do not that he is a complete changer.
It is nothing against Vokoun, who has been strong this season with a 13-4 record in twenty games. It is simply the fact that regardless of how you look at Fleury this year, or last year, regular season versus playoffs, these issues go way beyond a goaltender. They go way beyond any amount of soft goals he let up, and they go way beyond the coaching staff that half of Pens fans think needs to go.
I do think that Vokoun will help, and I do think the Pens can pull this series off. I also think that if the Pens intend on doing that they need to really sit there and realize that Cups are not handed out and that in order to get there you need to want it.
What they’re dealing with goes way beyond anything a practice or film review can fix. Mentally, they need a reality check and quick. If that does not occur soon, and I mean within the next few hours, they will be getting out their golf clubs and opening up their summer homes.
And yes, I say this while acknowledging the fact that Fleury has let up 40 goals in his past 10 playoff games. I also say this realizing that a few key members of our defense looked beyond lost, and a few of our forwards looked like they WANTED to pass the pucks to the guys in the blue.
I simply think that the biggest issue on the Pens team is the Pens themselves. I hope someone brought in a team therapist to get to the bottom of this and quick. I don’t want this season to end without a Cup.
