Guest Blog by SteelersCrash : Either Todd Haley or Mike Tomlin/Ben Have to Go
The Steelers 16-9 loss to the Titans in a game that would have made Ray Sherman look like Mike Holmgren, has made me realize that one of two things will happen before the 2014 season begins next year.
1. Head Coach (We think) Mike Tomlin is allowed to have his say and Haley goes, fellow assistant Randy Fichtner replaces him, he then uses elements of his "Memphis Spread" offense and the Steelers get out from under the stone age.
Or
2. Tomlin goes, Ben goes, Haley gets promoted to head coach and they sign a cheap scrub to hand off and play "Steeler Football".
Today was a disgrace. Ben Roethlisberger, one of the most successful VERTICAL throwers in NFL HISTORY, completed 63% of his passes (His career average) for a robust 5.8 yards per attempt.
Do you people realize how pathetic that is? How disrespectful that is?
It's like having Sidney Crosby playing goalie, it's like having Andrew McCutchen pitch.
If Art Rooney II is still hell bent on keeping his Hall Of Fame quarterback "In his place" simply because he and his former coach were, in his opinion "too close"? It's time to do the right thing for everyone involved and let Ben go elsewhere.
He's earned the right to end his career with respect. I watch the 49ers and Packers value their quarterbacks like prized race horses. Give them the football and tell them to go make plays, be the focal point, win or lose. Go down swinging.
The Steelers have their own version of Seabiscuit pulling a farmer's plow.
Haley's alleged compromise with the offensive players and coaches was nothing more than PR spin.
Today's farce told me that nothing has changed. Haley remains the same Art Rooney II ass-kissing puppet that he was last season. The offensive line gets blamed because every run is up the middle, they have 8 men at the line of scrimmage at times and people actually wonder why they can't block when everyone knows what's coming.
Ben has been the good soldier all off season, all through camp, and even after the game today. At some point however, I could see him doing what Jeff George did with June Jones in 1996. Keeping his frustrations in check will only last for so long in my opinion, and we all saw George and Jones' blow up during a prime time game, and then George never played for the Falcons again.
Part of me wonders, if that's what Rooney II wants anyway. I can't see him paying Ben the big money it will take to extend him to run Haley's 1976 offense.
Hey, the Steelers do play in prime time next week, don't they?
