When you're talking to your buddy about going to the club or seeing some horrible Ryan Reynolds superhero movie, yins start making making a list of whom to invite:
Gary? Sure.
Sally? She's still single, so hell yeah!
Jamal? Cool.
That's how I feel about the possible returns of Plaxico Burress and Jaromir Jagr. Besides, these guys are not going to coming here anyway. We're Matrix dodging two bullets.
Let's begin with Plax. Am I wrong, or have the Steelers always been a classy organization that makes smart personnel moves and usually puts the best foot forward? Of course I'm right and that's what makes the Steelers the marque franchise in the NFL.
So how would bringing in a ex-con make any sense? Yeah, I'll give Burress his due credit and not take anything away from his talent. He is a amazing fade route runner and, with his 6'5" frame, is a corner of the end-zone threat. He has speed, strength, and a Super Bowl ring. But his character is rated at zero. Everyone and their grandmother knows of the gun incident, but what what the two domestic disturbances and lawsuit with a Lebanon car dealership? Oh, and plus, he's a EX-CON! Really, did I have to say more after that? We don't need him.
Mike Wallace's continued emergence gives Ben another solid target. Hell, I'd rather have Steely McBeam lining up in the slot than Burress.
Jagr, no. Why do people want Jags back? I hold no grudge over Jaromir for wanting to leave Pittsburgh. No Pens fans should. He wasn't going to get paid and he felt he wasn't getting the respect he deserves. He does command respect in Pittsburgh. Jagr is second on all Penguins scoring
records (except points per game; 3rd) and helped the team win two Stanley Cups. To quote S.E. Hinton, "that was then and this is now". Even though he is still playing, Jags is 39 years old and slow as Shaq on a fastbreak.
Can he still score? Yeah, great scorers lose their skates but not their shot. Bringing Jaromir back is equivalent to trading for Alexei Kovalev. And how good did that turn out? Besides, Jagr is using us as leverage to bleed more dollars out of Detroit. He wants paid. He wants to win now. We can only offer him the latter. Jags will be a Red Wing next year. The Pens need to play their young guns like Brent Sterling and Dustin Jeffrey.
Hell, I'd rather see Iceberg on the first line than Jagr. Pittsburgh doesn't need these guys. We gain nothing from bringing them in. So have fun at the club and leave Plax and Jags with Little Jimmy.

hahah your garbage if you dont think jagr would help the pens out regardless of price or any of that. you cant compare jagr to kovalev either.
ReplyDeletesaying jagr wont work next year because kovalev didnt work out last year is the most idiotic comparison i've ever heard. 1) jagr has about 100x more heart than kovalev ever had/has/will ever have, and 2) he'll be on a line with malkin and/or crosby, instead of being on a line centered by mark letestu. what about billy guerin? he was 38 or 39 and worked out extremely well on a line with sid. is jagr a step slow? of course. can he still shoot the puck and have great hands? of course. i wouldnt spend any more than $1.5 mill or so on him but to say that he wouldnt HELP the penguins is absurd. stick to writing about football please. a 9 year old pee-wee player knows more about hockey.
ReplyDeleteAndrew, I also have to say that I disagree. Jagr would be a great fit for this team as long as they don't pay him over 3 mil a year.
ReplyDelete1st anonymous: you're* not your. Your english is garbage
ReplyDeleteIt is in my opinion the Pens should focus on their younger players instead of getting older. Guys like Johnson, Jeffery, Sterling, Connor, and Letestu are NHL ready NOW. We shouldn't be wasting their talents in the AHL. The more we play them at the higher level, the more productive they will become. Signing Jagr is a quick fix. Will any of those guys I named have as productive a year as Jagr might? Who knows. No one knows. Jagr is going to want to get paid, and he is most certainly not going to come here for $1.5 million. Maybe $3 million, but most likely more. Jagr would help the powerplay, but who is too say those young guns wouldn't either? Thank you for supporting 412sportstalk.net
