A below average outing from Charlie Morton mixed with sloppy defense was a recipe for disaster as the Pirates fell 10-7 to division rival St Louis on Tuesday night. Morton, who came in to the game allowing only 5 earned runs in his first 3 starts, was shelled for 5 earned in 4.1 innings.
The defense was a no-show accounting for 3 unearned runs on 4 errors. Falling to 10-13 the Pirates will need to win 2 in a row to take the series.
While the defense and pitching were dismal tonight, the offense seems to be hitting its stride. Led by Pedro Alvarez going 2-4 with a home run and 3 RBIs, the Pirates scored 7 runs on 9 hits bringing a total of 16 runs scored in 2 games. Jose Tabata added his first home run of the season while Neil Walker tallied two more hits bringing his average to .293.

Garrett Jones added 2 RBIs to bring his season total to 10 in limited action. After not scoring more than 5 runs in the first 22 games, the last two outings are a good sign for a team that came into the ballgame last in the NL in runs scored.
A.J. Burnett (1-1 1.38 ERA) will face Lance Lynn (4-0 1.33 ERA) in the 2nd game of the 3 games series on Wednesday night.
