Pirates Weekly Preview 6/11/12
Current Record: 32-27 (Tied for first)
Upcoming Schedule
@ Baltimore 6/12 to 6/14
@ Cleveland 6/15 to 6/17
What would you have thought if back in April, somebody told you that by June the Pirates would be in first place in the NL Central and that they would be tied for the 9th best record in Major League Baseball?
Personally, I would have laughed and responded with one of the old, "let's hope so" phrases.
Well here they are. Five games over .500 when just two weeks ago they struggling to even reach it. The Milwaukee sweep capped off yesterday afternoon makes five consecutive series victories for the Buccos, and improves their record to 7-2 for the month of June. The performance of the week is a toss up between Walker's 3-hit game against the Royals on Friday, and McCutchen's 2-hit, HR and Stolen base performance yesterday.
But every streak comes to an end at some point. Tomorrow the Pirates will travel to Baltimore to face the 34-26 Orioles who are coming off of a 2-1 series victory over the Phillies. On Friday, the squad travels to Cleveland to take on the Indians at Progressive Field. (Great ballpark by the way. Saw a few games up there last summer). Consecutive series victories against these two clubs is a reach, but with the way the Bucco's have been playing, it's certainly a possibility.
Players to Watch
Kevin Correia - Pitched a solid 5 innings against the Reds on Thursday, but was not credited with the win. He is the probable starter for Wednesday's matchup against the Orioles. He still looking for win #3, and just his second since April 15.
Neil Walker - Is really starting to heat up out there. Has 14 hits in the last 10 games, including five multi-hit games. He's also a crowd favorite, which always helps...
Alex Presley - Had 8 hits last week after returning to the lineup as the Buc's leadoff man. Let's see if he can continue his success against some of the big guys this week.
