Pittsburgh PIrates: Two steps forward one step back

Just when you think the Pirates are about to get over the proverbial hump and above .500 they have seemingly taken a step back. After reaching .500 on Wednesday night the Pirates have proceeded to drop their next two games, moving their record to 30-32 on the year.

Last night in an 8-1 drumming at the hands of the Mets, the Pirates bats were silenced the entire night. Beyond an Andrew McCutchen RBI single in the first inning, the Pirates struggled to do anything significant against the Mets’ Dillon Gee.

Gee moved his record to a perfect 7-0, beating the Pirates for the second time this season. He kept the ball down in the strike zone and even when balls were hit hard, they were hit hard on the ground.

Charlie Morton didn’t help the cause either. For the first time in several starts his control was erratic and failed to execute his game plan. Said Morton, “I was missing up and in, down and in, low and away. That means there's something off -- timing's off, release is off, something. Nothing was consistent."

The Pirates have done a good job so far this year at minimizing how far their losing streaks have gone.
Coming off of two straight losses, James McDonald will take to the mound tonight against knuckleballer R.A. Dickey in hopes of moving the Bucco’s back closer to their season goal of .500.
