Jaromir Jagr duped the city of Pittsburgh and me into believing he was coming back to play for the Penguins one last year. I thought it was too good to be true. What does that have to do with my ex-girlfriend you ask? Well she, like Jagr, also made me believe that she was coming back into my life. She led me on just like Jagr led me on. I thought about her and about making amends and getting back together. I thought about her and finally being happy together. I thought about the possibilities of her and I having a happy ending.
At the same time I felt the exact same way about Jagr coming back to the Penguins.
I thought about Jagr playing with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin in the Consol Energy Center. The former Pens great playing with the current Pens greats. I thought about Jagr making amends with the city and the organization. I thought about the possibility of Jagr winning a Stanley Cup and retiring as a Penguin.
Now that I think about it, all of that was way too good to be true. Reality sunk in. I spent the entire week defending Jagr in every way possible. Saying that he was misunderstood, that it wasn't entirely his fault for wanting to leave Pittsburgh. So on and so forth. Man do I feel like an ass. Jagr spit right in my face by signing with the Philadelphia Flyers.
Jagr used Mario Lemieux and the Pittsburgh Penguins to get better offers, just like my ex-girlfriend. Jagr said that his "heart was Pittsburgh," and that “He owed it to Mario." Just like my ex-girlfriend told me her heart belonged to me. Both of them told lies, all lies. Jagr used the Penguins for leverage in a bidding war. Okay, maybe the similarities end there.
Jagr doesn't owe the fans anything, but the fans don't deserve this. I know many people who hate Jagr that were ready to give him a second chance. Jagr proceeded to spit in all of their faces.
Not only did he use the Penguins, he gave the entire organization and fanbase the middle finger by signing with the Flyers. The F-ing Flyers!
Right now I feel used by Jagr and my ex-girlfriend. Right now my heart is in shambles. I'm not looking for sympathy, but I sure could use some. I just have to ask why? Why do these kinds of things happen? Why would Jagr go to the Flyers?
I personally think Jagr went to the Flyers for two reasons:
1. He wanted to have a chance to be "the man." In Pittsburgh he would have been second fiddle to Crosby and Malkin. In Detroit he would have been second fiddle to Pavel Datsyuk and Nikolas Lidstrom. Whose Philly got that's a bigger name than Jagr?
Nobody.
2. Jagr went to Philly to spite the Penguins organization and the fans. Jagr is very emotional and he's mad the fans here were so hard on him. He's mad he gets booed when he returns. Jagr knew what he was doing during this entire #Jagrwatch fiasco. He may be a douche, but he's no dumbass.
Jagr provided the ultimate tease to Pens fans if you will. He led us to believe he was coming back for a happy ending. Just like my ex-girlfriend. I will never forgive Jagr for this. Going to the Flyers was the end all and be all. Now I feel way more hatred and anger towards Jagr than I do for my ex. I hope Jagr gets booed in Philly. I hope it doesn't work out. I hope he and the Flyers suck next year.
As for my ex, I already said too much. I hope that she and I can at least make amends and be friends at the very least. I wish her nothing but the best. I can’t say the same for Jagr.
