Pittsburgh Penguins: Top Questions That Will Be Answered in The Second Half

Technically the halfway point of the season is already over, as the Pittsburgh Penguins have already played 50 of their 82 games. Right now the Penguins sit in second place in their division and our in fourth place in the Eastern Conference. The Pens entered the All-Star break 31-15-4 record.

Steelers' Coach Mike Tomlin: Is He Already a Better Coach Than Bill Cowher?

If the Pittsburgh Steelers win the Super Bowl next Sunday, Mike Tomlin will be all over the record books. He would be the youngest coach to win two Super Bowls, and he would have two Super Bowls in his first four seasons as a head coach, another record.

Steelers Pep Rally

So I attended the Steeler's pep rally on Friday night at Heinz Field. It was a cold and bitter night in downtown Pittsburgh as a rumored 18,000 fans gathered to celeberate the Steelers going to the Super Bowl.

Steelers have a lot riding on Doug Legursky

Some think Pouncey’s injury could be a huge factor: But I have faith

Last Sunday, the Steelers rookie All-Pro center, Maukrice Pouncey left the field early in the first quarter, and failed to return.  On Thursday, it was released that he had a “broken bone” in his left ankle.

Ben Roethlisberger Is an Elite Quarterback and One of the Best of All Time

I'm beginning to believe that fantasy football is starting to destroy the perception of how players should be judged. Apparently, to be an "elite" QB in the NFL nowadays, all you have to do is throw for 4,000 yards. Even if your team doesn't make the playoffs, you're still elite because you're asked to throw the ball a lot.
There's also a lot of talk about whether or not Ben Roethlisberger deserves to be mentioned as an elite quarterback. Most of Ben's detractors say that he only wins because of his defense and running game. That's true in small doses, but Ben is certainly a big reason why the Steelers will be competing for their third Super Bowl in six years in two Sundays.

Doug Legursky's chance to shine in the Super Bowl

The Steelersare heading to the Super Bowl but something is missing.  The Steelers will make the trip to North Texas without the services of their Pro Bowl center.  Maurkice Pouncey is doubtful for the game due to a high ankle sprain suffered early in the AFC title game. Replacing the first round all everything rookie will be Doug Legursky.  Like the rest of Steelers Nation I am holding my breath.  So, who is this undrafted free agent and can he fill the shoes of the Steeler’s rookie of the year?

Pittsburgh Team On Fire.

written by Robert Dummer

The Duquesne Dukes are off to one of the best starts in school history, and no one has noticed. The Dukes have won nine consecutive contests including the first six Atlantic Ten conference games. Duquesne also has the A10 Freshman of the year in T.J. McConnell from Chartiers Valley who has won the weekly award four times already this year.  The current streak is one of the best kept secrets in the whole country. I can’t blame anyone for not noticing this march to the head of the conference.

Super Bowl 2011: Packers Present Multiple Matchup Problems for Steelers

Steeler Nation is buzzing right now, and it should be. The Pittsburgh Steelers will be playing in Super Bowl XLV two Sundays from now, marking their eighth appearance in the big game and their third appearance in the last six years.
Right now all is well in Steeler Nation, and it should be. The Steelers have overcome a lot of adversity this year and have a team that is capable of beating anyone on any given Sunday.
They have a great defense, a good running game, a good head coach and a franchise quarterback. What else could you want and/or need?

Pittsburgh Penguins Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury Proving Critics, Doubters Wrong

Marc-Andre Fleury and the Pittsburgh Penguins goaltending has been by far the No. 1 topic for the team this year.
Fleury and the Penguins had a disappointing second-round elimination in the 2009-2010 Stanley Cup playoffs via the Montreal Canadians. In that series, Fleury was not at his best to say the least. He allowed three or more goals in four of the seven games, including nine goals in the last two games.
This year was a highly anticipated year for the Penguins. We saw the opening of the beautiful new arena, the Consol Energy Center. The Penguins are also participated in the 2011 NHL Winter Classic at Heinz Field against their rivals, the Washington Capitals.

Mike Tomlin is the coach of the year

Back in March, Ben Roethlisberger was accused of sexual assault for the second time in just seven months. A month later, NFL Commissioner Roger Goddell suspended Ben for the first six games, (later reduced to four), of the 2010 NFL Season. It looked as if the Steelers’ playoff hopes vanished before they even set foot on the field. Mike Tomlin, going into just his fourth season as the Steelers head coach, told the media that he was “highly concerned for the franchise, and Roethlisberger”.

The Pittsburgh Steelers Are America's Team, Not the Dallas Cowboys

The term America's Team is a nickname that refers to the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League. The nickname originated with the team's 1978 highlight film, where the narrator opens with the following introduction: They appear on television so often that their faces are as familiar to the public as presidents and movie stars. They are the Dallas Cowboys, "America's Team."

Big Ben getting more respect than Tom Brady?

Big Ben more popular with players than Tom Brady?

After all the trash talk that has went on during the playoffs this year, I’ve noticed a few things…  For one, there is no way that Jets cornerback, Antonio Cromartie, has an IQ above 85, and also, it seems as if the players around the NFL tend to respect Ben Roethlisberger more than the “golden” Tom Brady.

What should the Steelers do with Aaron Smith?

It seems that Pittsburgh Steelers' defensive end Aaron Smith will be able to play this Sunday for the AFC Championship vs. the New York Jets.
But should he?
That's the question being asked by the media and Steelers' fans as the injured DE practices for the first time since tearing his triceps Oct. 24th in Miami.
If possible he is healthy enough to play, Smith should be on the field. He may only be able to be on the field for a few crucial plays, but any contribution from him would only be beneficial to a team and defense that is a game away from the Super bowl.
However, DE Ziggy Hood has played at a high level throughout the last few weeks, and had his best game last week against Baltimore. Smith is an elite player, but how effective will he be with so much rust to knock off?
Undoubtedly, Smith's return adds depth to the Steelers defensive line now.
But what do the Steelers do with him after the playoffs?
His contract expires after next season and he's had three season-ending injuries in the last four years. Hood has played well in Smith's absence and is ready to be a full-time starter.
Will the Steelers re-sign Smith for depth? Would Smith accept a smaller contract and a possible backup role?
It should be an interesting off-season, whether or not NFL games are played next year.

NFL Playoffs 2011: Ben Roethlisberger Gives Steelers the Edge Over Jets

Just a few days away from the AFC Championship Game between the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers, I find myself calm, relaxed and confident about the Steelers' chances this Sunday.
Of course, Jets fans will say that I'm just biased and that I shouldn't "sleep" on the Jets, but I believe I have good reasons.
I could tell you that my confidence comes from the Steelers being at home for this game or that I believe they'll win because the game is being played on Myron Cope's birthday, but that's not the reason.
The reason I expect a victory for the black and gold this Sunday is mostly due to the quarterbacks of each team.

Pittsbugh Steelers Defense Makes Big Plays Without Troy Polamalu

Troy Polamalu is arguably the most important defensive player in the league to his team. He is a freak of nature that plays the position of safety unlike anyone I have ever seen. This year he was named the AFC defensive player of the year and could end up being named the NFL defensive player of the year.

Last week I wrote that the Steelers would beat the Baltimore Ravens because of Ben Roethlisberger and Mr. Polamalu, and the fact that those two always seem to come up big against the Ravens. Big Ben certainly came up big in a very clutch performance, helping the Steelers advance to the AFC Championship.

Pittsburgh Penguins Need More From Evgeni Malkin

The Pittsburgh Penguins are really fortunate to have two of the best players in the league at the same position, on the same team. Sidney Crosby is the best player in the NHL and Evgeni Malkin is probably one of the five most talented players in the league. That's why those two have been dubbed the "two-headed monster."
When the Penguins landed Crosby it rejuvenated the franchise. Sid is a once-in-a-lifetime player, who gives 110 percent on almost every shift. Crosby also says and does the right things off the ice.

Big Ben Roethlisbeger Is Clutch, That Much Is a Fact

When the Pittsburgh Steelers went into halftime of Saturday's playoff game against the Baltimore Ravens down 21-7, I had little doubt in my mind that they would comeback and win.
Not just because the Steelers are a really good team and were at home, but mostly because of their starting quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger.
Since Ben has been the starting quarterback of the Steelers, he's been a winner; more than that, he's been clutch in big games and in big moments.
The dictionary defines clutch as "tending to be successful in tense or critical situations."
That's a perfect definition and defines Big Ben perfectly as well.
On Saturday, Ben did receive some help from the defense as they forced a couple of turnovers; that being said, Ben and the offense did their job and took advantage and turned those turnovers into two touchdown passes.

Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Baltimore Ravens: Big Ben, Polamalu Give Steelers Edge by mad chad

We all know that the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens have a vicious rivalry.
The two teams will meet for the third time this year when they play a playoff game at Heinz Field. It will the second time in three years that they will play each other three times in one season.
The teams are evenly matched for the most part, but I like the Steelers' chances because of two players: Troy Polamalu and Ben Roethlisberger.
Since 2004, the Steelers are 8-2 against the Baltimore Ravens when Ben Roethlisberger starts at quarterback. That includes six straight victories since 2006.
Ben is the perfect quarterback for the Steelers because of his size, toughness, mobility and clutch play.
Along with an 8-2 record against Baltimore, Ben has 15 touchdowns and just eight interceptions, while averaging an 85.4 QB rating. The only two times the Ravens have beaten the Steelers when Ben was the quarterback were in 2006.

Only Fitting: The Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens Meet in the Playoffs

I consider it the best rivalry in the NFL. The Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens are almost mirror images of each other. The both play with an attitude and swagger that gets under their opponents' skin. Most of all, both teams are tough and have a very tough persona.
Despite the Ravens only being in the league since 1996, they are technically the real Cleveland Browns. The Brown moved to Baltimore in 1996 and became the Ravens. So it's only fitting that the Ravens are the Steelers' biggest rivals.

Peyton Manning's Playoff Performances Makes Him Overrated

Peyton Manning was recently voted the seventh best football player in NFL history by the NFL Network. He's on pace to own or at least compete to own most of the all-time passing records in the NFL. He's a perennial Pro-Bowler and is often thought of as the greatest quarterback of his generation. Yet I feel like Peyton has been very underwhelming in the playoffs for his career.

Jersey Shore is Fucking Stupid and You're Fucking Stupid for Watching

Now I have a pretty big and diverse group of friends. I'm cool with a lot of different people. The only real fault I have with people now a days is if they actually enjoy watching the MTV show "Jersey Shore".

Ben Roethlisberger Proving His Critics and Doubters Wrong

The 2010 offseason found Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger getting his character questioned by most.
After he was accused of a sexual crime by a 20-year-old college student, it seemed that Ben had lost a lot of supporters and fans—especially considering that it was his second accusation of a sexual crime in just one year.

Four Pens named to the NHL All-Star Game

The voting for the 2010-2011 NHL All-Star Game has come to a close. The fans have spoken. The top six vote getters all get into the game automatically. Those six were: Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jonathan Toews, Kris Letang, Duncan Keith and Marc-Andre Fleury.

John Clayton ranks Big Ben Roethlisberger as the 4th best qb in the NFL

John Clayton of ESPN just ranked all of the quarterbacks in the NFL. This was not a fantasy football ranking system, because only morons judge players on what they do in fantasy football. You can see the entire list here.

Pittsburgh Steelers' Fans Should Root For The Colts and The Ravens This Weekend

The Pittsburgh Steelers proved all the experts wrong this year by going 12-4 and earning themselves a bye in the playoffs. Now with a weak off, the Steelers have a chance to sit back and watch the first round of the playoffs as fans, and have a chance to get healthy.

The Steelers will host a playoff game in the second round of the playoffs at Heinz Field. If the Indianapolis Colts defeat the New York Jets, the Colts will come to Pittsburgh to play the Steelers in the second round. If the Jets defeat the Colts they will play the Patriots in the second round and the Steelers would then face the winner of the Ravens/Chiefs game.

Pittsburgh Penguins sign Deryk Engelland to an extension

Courtesy of Pittsburgh Penguins.com, the Pens have resigned Deryk Engelland to an extension. The new contract is for three years. Engelland is becoming a much better hockey player, but he's mostly know as a tough guy.

It's going to be interesting to see what the Pens do with their defensive core in the future. They have seven NHL defensemen signed for next year and still have some good looking prospects in the farm system, including Simon Despres.
