I knew that people would fall in love with Cam Newton after they got to see him work out. I knew that his draft stock was going to do nothing but go up as we march toward the NFL Draft. There's no doubt that Newton is a great athlete.

Max Talbot is overrated
Can one game in professional sports make your whole entire career a success?
If Pittsburgh Penguins' forward Maxime Talbot is any indication, it sure seems that way.
The fan-favorite will live in Penguins infamy forever thanks to the fact that he scored two goals in Game Seven of the 2008-2009 Stanley Cup Finals.

Ben Roethlisberger is a Great Quarterback: Why the Haters are Wrong
So Ben Roethlisberger didn't play well in Super Bowl XLV. He threw two interceptions in the Super Bowl and the Pittsburgh Steelers lost to the Green Bay Packers. Here come the haters. Ben now has three touchdown passes and five interceptions in three career Super Bowl games. Not very impressive. That being said, Ben is still one of the best quarterbacks in the league and of his generation.
Pitt loses to Louisville
by Emily Mallon
Pitt lost another tough one in the end falling to Loiusville 62-59 yesterday. Losing in overtime always stings, but the Panthers must re-group and get ready for South Florida on Wednesday. Pitt is in jeopardy of losing their #1 seed. Joe Lunardi still has Pitt as a #1 in his most recent Bracketology but the Panthers are now number #5 in the ESPN poll and tied with Duke for #4 in the AP poll. Duke will get the nod if it's between Pitt and Duke for a #1.
It may not be fair, but Pitt fans need to prepare themselves for a #2 seed.
For the Panthers to get a #1 seed now, they MUST beat USF, Villanova, and make it to the Championship game of the Big East Tournament. It's possible for them the get there without this plan, but other teams would have to lose and Pitt cannot rely on that.
Although they played better in the 2nd half, the Panthers looked sloppy throughout the entire game. Nasir Robinson had a rough game only scoring 3 points. Gilbert Brown led Pitt with 20 points but missed a crucial layup at the end of the game.
The only bright spot on Sunday was a male cheerleader for Louisville thinking the game was over and celebrating by throwing the ball in the air resulting in a technical. After losing to St. John's and Louisville in close games it's hard to feel happy, but this video should give you a laugh:

Pitt vs Lousiville: Full Preview
written by Emily Mallon
Pitt will travel to the KFC Yum! Center tomorrow afternoon to face 21-7 Louisville. (KFC Yum! Center is in fact the name of their arena). As with most Rick Pitino coached teams, Louisville is playing well at the end of the regular season. They're 10-5 in the Big East and working to get a first round bye in the Big East Tournament. Pitt has already cemented their first round bye.

Anthony Rendon Watch: Can't-Miss Prospect Heating Up Early
written by Jon Pennline
When Rice University's Junior third basemen Anthony Rendon took the field last Friday against Stanford, he was not only starting a new season, he was playing in his first game since July 2010 when he brutally shattered his right ankle. As expected, Rendon struggled in his return debut going 0-4 in a 5-3 loss to the Cardinal. In his second game, he went 1-4 with a run scored. In his third game, he went 2-4. Now, with six games in the books on this young season, Anthony Rendon has reclaimed his top spot on the Owl's hitting chart with a .417 batting average while also hitting his first home run last night against USC.

Brooks Orpik injured. Pens continue to suffer from the injury bug
No matter how the Pittsburgh Penguins season ends this year, one will have to ask himself what kind of a season it could have been without all of the injuries.
Pittsburgh Penguins Acquire Former Winger Alexei Kovalev
Ray Shero must not have been satisfied with just getting James Neal and Matt Niskanen, as he traded a seventh round pick to the Ottawa Senators for former Pens' winger Alexei Kovalev.
Pitt beats WVU. Lamar Patterson breaks through
by Emily Mallon
Lamar Patterson had a career best 11 points in last nights victory against West Virginia. Patterson has been contributing quality minutes for the Panthers recently, but his shot wasn't falling. Last night, it finally did. Pitt went on to beat WVU 71-58.

Pens trade for Kovalev
It was announced today that the Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired forward Alexi Kovalev for a conditional 7th round draft pick. That pick becomes a 6th rounder if the Pens wins a 1st round playoff series, and Kovalev plays half the games. This is a great move by Ray Shero because it is low risk and high reward acquisition. It will be the first time Kovalev put a Penguins sweater on since the 2003 season. Kovalev will defiantly be great addition to the forward group. I don’t see Kovalev producing anywhere near what he used to, but hopefully a change of scenery will do him well.

Pitt vs WVU
Emily Mallon
The Panthers will look to make a statement tonight on their home court against bitter rivals WVU. Pitt lost a heartbreaker to St. John's on Saturday 60-59 and they're looking to redeem themselves in the national spotlight. Many think if Pitt would've held on, they'd be the #1 team in the nation and a lock for a 1 seed. Now, however unfair it may seem, they're in legitimate jeopardy of losing that seed.

Pens lose to the Sharks
Lori Pometo
Scrappy center Tyler Kennedy has been heating up the ice lately. He's produced 7 goals in just the last 11 games, including a pair last night against the San Jose Sharks. They turned out to be the only Pittsburgh goals. He somehow just knows, maybe even a bit more than the rest at the moment, exactly how and when to get to the net, "I know my centermen and my winger throw it to the net and that's where I gotta be." He's clearly proven that. He scored the first goal of the night 6 minutes into the first period. It was a much needed confidence boost for the Pens who failed to score in their last game against the Capitols.
Will Ben Will Lovejoy ever get more ice time?
Lori Pometo
I know that Monday's trade of Alex Goligoski brought defensemen, Matt Niskanen as well as forward James Neal, both from the Dallas Stars to Pittsburgh, but I would still love to see seventh defensemen, Ben Lovejoy given more opportunity to help fill in the gap. Lovejoy currently shares ice time with fellow D-man Deryk Engelland.

Pittsburgh Steelers Should Focus on Upgrading Offensive Line and Secondary
In the aftermath of the Pittsburgh Steelers' Super Bowl XLV loss, most fans and critics are calling for some drastic changes.
Some changes are already underway as Steelers defensive backs coach Ray Horton has been named defensive coordinator of the Arizona Cardinals.
MLB division preview, AL East
by Mike Asti
It's that time of year once again. The snow goes away, the grass comes out, and most importantly spring is almost here (Phil did see his shadow!). All this hints to gearing up for the 2011 Major League Baseball season. Last year was the year of the pitcher. This was evident by the record number of no hitters, perfect games, even the first ever 28* out perfecto, and all the way through October, as a boring offense ended one of sports longest title droughts thanks the guys on the mound. With all that said, it is meaningless now. I will preview each division taking into account off-season changes and many other factors.

Pittsburgh Penguins Goalie Marc-Andre Fleury: From Goat to Team MVP
Turnaround stories and sports go hand and hand. Pittsburgh Penguins starting goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury is having a great turnaround story himself this year.
Gibbs Is Back, Panthers Are Poised
Ashton Gibbs returned to the lineup for the Pittsburgh Panthers on Saturday and while the team still lost in his return following a three-game absence, there was plenty of encouraging signs in the defeat.
Pens lose to the Caps
It was bad enough that the Pens had to play back to back games against the Washington Captials and Chicago Blackhawks. One thing we didn't count on was that they would have to play them without Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby, and Chris Kunitz.

Pens trade Goligoski to Dallas Stars for James neal and Matt Niskanen
Pittsburgh Penguins General Manager Ray Shero has struck again, and this time he didn't wait until the trade deadline. Despite the fact that the Penguins are without Evgeni Malkin for the rest of the season and without Sidney Crosby out indefinitely with a concussion, Shero was bound to try to improve his team short-term should Crosby return for a playoff run.
Pitt loses to St.Johns in disappointing fashion.
written by Emily Mallon
Pitt's loss to St. John's on Saturday afternoon caused them to drop in the ESPN coaches poll from #4 for #6. The AP poll (voted on by sports writers) has the Panthers at #4. The good news is Pitt received 12 first place votes in the AP and 4 in the Coaches poll. The bad news is Duke is now the number 1 team in both polls.

Another one bites the dust
By: Kody Kobik
It was announced today by head coach Bylsma that Nick Johnson left practice early with an upper-body injury, and at the moment is not available for this weekend. At what point with these injuries do you just sit back and laugh a bit. I know there teams out there that have more man games lost to injury, but this stretch that the Pens are on is just unbelievable. If indeed Johnson can’t go, we will likely see Timmy Wallace re-called from WB/S again.

Despite All Of The Distractions, The Pittsburgh Penguins Remain in Playoff Hunt
So if I were to tell you that the Pittsburgh Penguins would lose Sidney Crosby, Jordan Staal, and Evgeni Malkin for a lengthy period of time, would you expect them to still be in fourth place in the Eastern Conference? I know I wouldn't. Yet somehow, someway, the flightless birds are in in fourth place in the East, and are just a couple of wins away from passing the Philadelphia Flyers for first place in the Atlantic Division. This is a remarkable feat.
Jordan Staal's time to shine
Written by: Andrew Callender
With the two of the Penguins best players out of the lineup, it is time for another of the best to show what he is made of. That player is Jordan Staal. Staal has always been third or at best second line center for the Pens, but with Crosby and Malkin both out long term he has been bumped up to number one center.

Pitt wins again. Nasir Robinson shines
by Emily Mallon
Nasir Robinson led the Panthers to a 67-55 victory over South Florida with 13 points and 10 rebounds. The junior is averaging 8.5 points per game and 5.3 rebounds. After watching him against WVU, Villanova, and now South Florida, it feels like those numbers should be way higher.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are tied for first!
Written by : Andrew Callender
Ok so it’s only the very beginning of Spring Training, but yes the Pirates are not only tied for first in the Grapefruit league, but also all of Major League Baseball. The sad part is this might be the only time we hear this… or is it?

How far can the Pens go without Sidney Crosby?
Lori Pometo
I don't want to admit it, but there is a real possibility that Sidney Crosby might not play again this season. The fact is he is slowly progressing, but with the regular season over two thirds of the way done, the chance of him sitting out is real.

written by Emily Mallon
Pitt is the Rodney Dangerfield of college basketball... they get no respect! With number 1 Kansas losing last night, Pitt should move up in the rankings next week if they continue their winning streak. Is Pitt a number 1 caliber team? Of course they are. Will they get the number 1 spot? No.

Pitt gets biggest win of the year at Villanova
written by Emily Mallon
lPitt ended Villanova's 46 game home winning streak last night by beating the Wildcats 57-54. Brad Wanamaker and Nasir Robinson, (both Philadelphia natives), led the offense for Pittsburgh. Wanamaker finished with 21 points while Robinson netted 15 and was part of a play resulting in a technical foul for Villanova that changed the game in Pittsburgh's favor.

Crosby's back in town, slowly getting better
by Lori Pometo
Pittsburgh, take a deep breath. Sidney Crosby is back in town. We can now stop the rumor mills because Sidney Crosby has not been abducted by aliens, fled to Switzerland or been crossed off the roster for the rest of the season (as some have questioned). Nor, was he ditching his teammates by not being around the past week. He is back from a much needed (mental) vacation to relax and spend time with his family.

Pitt vs Villanova. Full preview
by Emily Mallon
ESPN Gameday rolls into Philadelphia this weekend to cover Pitt vs. Villanova. Although WVU is Pitt's true rival, Villanova has risen to the top of Pitt fans most hated list in the past few years. After all, Pitt was seconds away from the Final Four when Scottie Reynolds dribbled the length of the court and scored. Thus beating Pitt by one and stamping 'Nova's ticket to the Final Four while Pitt fans could do nothing but hope for another opportunity in the coming years. This could be that year!

The Pens Need to Make a Move

Troy Polamalu and Steelers Secondary Disappoint in Super Bowl XLV
The Pittsburgh Steelers had a disappointing loss to the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XLV. Now everyone is out blaming Ben Roethlisberger, Rashard Mendenhall and Mike Tomlin, and all three of them deserve their share of the blame.
That being said, the Steelers' horrid pass defense cost them the game and has been their Achilles heel all season.

The hits just keep on coming for the Pens. Pittsburgh Penguins' star center Evgeni Malkin has a torn MCL and ACL and is likely out for the season. Comparing the defensive backs: Super Bowl preview

Tomorrow, the two will meet in Super Bowl 45. So, I’ve taken the time to break down these two teams defensive backfields, in attempt to predict whose will have the bigger impact against two of the leagues best quarterbacks.

Malkin can't stay healthy
written by Lori Pometo
Evgeni Malkin can’t seem to catch a break these days. The Penguins center recently missed five games due to a nagging knee injury and a nasty sinus infection. He returned Friday night against the Buffalo Sabres just to go down with only six minutes of playing time under his belt. He went down after clashing with defensemen Tyler Myers. Malkin lay on the ice, motionless as team trainers and players went to his aide. He missed the rest of the game with a reported lower body injury.

Other All-Star games could learn from NHL's new format
written by Andrew Callender
The NFL and the NBA could learn something from the NHL All Star game. What the NHL did for this years All Star game was remarkable. The fantasy draft set up was by far the best way to go. You really got to see how the players ranked each other. Now Staal’s first pick of his teams goalie Cam Ward was a bit biased, but after that you could see the strategy’s play out. It was obvious the players were having a lot of fun just watching it unfold. From a fans perspective it was very interesting to watch. I know personally every year when I buy the NHL games, the first thing I do is a fantasy draft. It was a intriguing to see how the players would draft as compared to my friends and me.

The Three Premier Franchises in the NFL Today- Who’s the best?
Since 2000, it’s somewhat obvious that the NFL has been dominated by three franchises. The Pittsburgh Steelers, the New England Patriots, and the Indianapolis Colts. The three of these teams combined for eight super bowl appearances this past decade, winning six of them.
Staal match penalty uncalled for
Brandon Prust of the New York Rangers elbowed Pittsburgh Penguins center Jordan Staal in the face tonight and Staal simply retaliated with a singular punch to Prust’s face, knocking him down. There was no long, drawn out fight. Staal received a five minute match penalty, which forced him to leave the ice for the rest of the game. Five minutes?! For only one punch? He’s banned from the rest of the game?
Super Bowl XLV will be history in the making
With Super Bowl XLV upon us very soon, I feel it is necessary to put this matchup and the teams involved in the proper historical perspective. The Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers will square off in one of the most anticipated encounters in recent memory. Over the last decade, several franchises have reached the big game for the first time in their history, Tampa Bay in XXXVII, Carolina in XXXVIII, Seattle in XL, Arizona in Super Bowl XLIII, and of course the Saints last season as the most note worthy. Neither of this seasons representatives will be added to this list.

Troy Polamalu Wins Well-Deserved AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award
Troy Polamalu has been named The Associated Press 2010 NFL Defensive Player of the Year. In a year where Ben Roethlisberger missed the first four games and the Steelers offense was lethargic at times, Polamalu and the defense stepped up and helped the Steelers go 12-4 and make the Super Bowl.
Polamalu, who was also voted to his fifth Pro Bowl this year, was absolutely electric for most of the season. He impacts the game unlike any defensive player I've ever seen.
